about Activista

Who we are &
what are our strengths.

Some beautiful words
from our National Coordinator.

We are a network of young women and men who believe that a Gambia that promotes diversity and change for all genders and ages can be accomplished only by concerted efforts by young people who are specifically impacted by poverty, discrimination, marginalization, and oppression at the family, community, and national levels.

We are convinced that young people’s active participation is critical in the fight against hunger, youth unemployment, subjugation, and other manifestations of oppression. As a result, it is critical to stay centered and embedded in neighborhoods and youth-serving organizations, as well as to form unity with like-minded organizations and campaigns.

We put in long hours and work hard

Omar Danso

Activista The Gambia is a youth led civil society organization working to promote the rights of young men and women through empowerment, campaign and solidarity. Activista provides unique opportunities for youth to engage in meaningful activities supporting their empowerment and development. Young people often have specific challenges, but they also have many shared experiences. Besides being young, Activistas are also women seeking equality with men, the hungry seekin for food and nutrition security and people demanding for democratic and political space for influencing work. Activista is not about generational conflict but struggles together with others for a fundamental shift in power imbalances based on class, gender, ethnicity and age.

Activista visions a world without poverty and injustice in which young people enjoy their right to a life of dignity. Activista’s mission is to work with poor and excluded people to eradicate poverty and injustice. Activista empowers and enables young people to actively participate in the decision making and political processes that affect their lives. Activista’s network focus is on capacity building, shared learning, global/national campaigning, and strong regional networks. We aim to develop young leaders and activists with the skills, knowledge and attitude necessary to create social change. We also work to create a space for national discussions amongst activists to improve the capacity to organise and mobilise youth – using social media and other tools to connect marginalised youth with other youth and power holders at all levels.

Our Vision

A just, equitable and sustainable society in which every person enjoys the right to a life of dignity, freedom from poverty and all forms of oppression.

Our Mission

To achieve social justice, gender equality, youth and women empowerment, and poverty eradication by working with people living in poverty and exclusion, their communities, people’s organizations, activists, social movements, youth, women and their agencies  and supporters.
